More than 183 families from the Hawazma clan have been displaced from Khor Al-Dileib and Um-Barambita, most of them women, children, and the elderly, following a coordinated attack by the Sudanese Army Forces its militias on unarmed civilians. The displaced families have sought refuge in Sarafaya, an area under the control of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in Nuba Mountains /South Kordofan – Delami County after their meagre possessions were looted.

Following a long and arduous journey, the families arrived in Sarafaya, where the regional government conducted an inspection visit to assess their situation.

SPLM-N’s Response

During his visit to the displaced families, comrade/ Hashim Abdullah, SPLM-N’s regional secretary and representative of the governor, stated:

“We have come with a large delegation to welcome you and stand by your side, as the central government has long sought to divide the people of the marginalized areas. You are now in safety and freedom.”

He added:

“The Sudanese army has once again proven its true nature. Since its inception, it has waged war against its own people, displacing them and committing atrocities. The marginalized communities have a painful history filled with such violations. This army has a long record of oppression, corruption, and brutality, protecting corrupt regimes in the centre. It was responsible for the secession of South Sudan and the outbreak of wars across Sudan, including in Khartoum.”

He emphasized that the marginalized communities had made a difficult but necessary decision by signing the Sudan Founding Charter, which, for the first time, united these communities.

“The SPLM-N has fought for decades to reclaim the rights of the marginalized from the central government. The recently signed Transitional Constitution in Nairobi presents a fundamental solution to Sudan’s crisis,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of enrolling displaced children in schools, arguing that education is key to solving many issues, accusing the central government of deliberately keeping the marginalized communities in ignorance.

Mr. Juma Idris Koko, commissioner of the Sudanese Relief and Reconstruction Agency, stated:

“Upon receiving reports about the displacement of these families, we immediately took action to address the situation. We firmly believe that humanity is indivisible, and we are committed to delivering aid to all those in need in the liberated areas.”

He explained that the agency is working to provide food, medicine, clean drinking water, shelter materials, and essential supplies.

So far, the total number of displaced Hawazma people has reached 1,036 individuals, with more expected to arrive as displacement continues. He also called on international organizations to provide urgent support and assistance to the displaced families.

Delami County Governor: The Center Has Torn Apart Social Fabric

Mr Abdullah Adam Al-Zubair, Commissioner of Delami County, expressed deep sorrow over the suffering of the displaced families, stressing that the Sudanese army continues to target civilians.

He stated:

“We have long-standing historical ties in grazing lands, markets, and agriculture, but the central government has worked to tear us apart and push us into conflict, while it continues to plunder the resources of the regions.”

He affirmed that the displaced people are welcome as brothers and family members and that the local community will share its available resources with them. He also instructed the education department to accelerate the enrollment of displaced children in schools.

SPLM-N Army: Protecting the Marginalized is Our Duty.

Commander Jalingei Lotilo, commander of the SPLM-N’s Third Infantry Brigade, assured the displaced families:

“Your safety and security are our responsibility. Do not be deceived by the propaganda of the Port Sudan regime.”

He reaffirmed that the SPLM-N Army and its allies are fully prepared to protect the marginalized communities across Sudan.

Hawazma Elders: The Sudanese Army Committed Horrific Atrocities

Sheikh Bilal Ali Norain, head chief of the displaced Hawazma families, expressed gratitude to the SPLM-N and the local community for their warm reception, which helped ease their suffering.

He stated:

“The Sudanese army has committed the most horrific atrocities against us, including killings, looting, and beatings. They even stole the clothes of women and children, along with their food supplies, including flour and ready-to-eat meals.”

He also condemned the inaction of some local recruits within the Sudanese army, asking:

“How can they remain indifferent while witnessing such crimes, simply out of fear of being labelled as anti-army?”

He emphasized that the attack was ethnically motivated, as some Hawazma individuals are part of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

He urged marginalized individuals serving in the Sudanese army and militias to make the right decision and stand with their people instead of protecting the central government.
